About the Foundation

The John J. Daly Cold War Legacy Foundation is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and sharing the life, service, and historical collection of MSgt John J. Daly.

Spanning four decades of Cold War history, the collection preserves documents, photographs, slides, films, military orders, correspondence, publications, and artifacts documenting military service, intelligence operations, family life overseas, and major world events from the aftermath of World War II through the Vietnam era.

Today, the Foundation works with museums, archives, educators, historians, and researchers to ensure these materials remain accessible for research, exhibition, education, and public understanding.

Who Was John J. Daly?

MSgt John J. Daly served from the aftermath of World War II through the height of the Cold War and into the Vietnam era. His assignments took him from occupied Japan to Trieste, Germany, England, Berlin, Vietnam, Thailand, and numerous intelligence and technical assignments throughout the world.

Throughout his career, Daly carefully preserved documents, photographs, military orders, correspondence, and personal artifacts that today provide a unique firsthand record of Cold War history and the experiences of an American military family serving overseas.

1946–1948 | Occupation of Japan

1st Cavalry Division, 7th Regiment – Tokyo, Japan

Served in occupied Japan following World War II during the rebuilding of Japan and the beginning of the Cold War.

1948–1952 | Free Territory of Trieste

2nd Battalion, 351st Infantry Regiment

Served in the Free Territory of Trieste, one of the earliest Cold War frontiers between East and West.

1955–1957 | Azores Islands

1605th USAFRES – Lajes Field, Azores

Assigned to the strategically important Azores Islands, supporting American military operations between North America and Europe.

1957–1959 | Wiesbaden, Germany

497th Reconnaissance Technical Group

Served in Germany during a period of growing Cold War tensions and increasing technical intelligence operations throughout Europe.

1959–1961 | Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska

544th Reconnaissance Technical Group

Supported Air Force technical intelligence activities from one of the nation's most important strategic installations during the height of the Cold War.

1961–1963 | RAF Bentwaters, England

Headquarters, 81st Tactical Fighter Wing

Served in England during one of the most tense periods of the Cold War, including the Berlin Crisis and Cuban Missile Crisis era.

1963–1967 | Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio

Headquarters, Foreign Technology Division

Assigned to the Foreign Technology Division, one of the United States Air Force's premier intelligence organizations responsible for evaluating foreign military technology and capabilities.

1967–1970 | Berlin, Germany

Detachment 3, Foreign Technology Division

Served in divided Berlin at the height of the Cold War. During this period, Daly documented military activities, East-West tensions, life along the Berlin Wall, and the experiences of his family living in one of the world's most important Cold War cities.

1970–1971 | Patrick Air Force Base, Florida

Headquarters, Air Force Eastern Test Wing (FTD)

Supported Air Force technical and intelligence operations during a period of rapid technological advancement and continued Cold War competition.

1971–1972 | Vietnam War

7th Air Force / USAF Technical Services & Data Services (TS/DS) – Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam

Served in South Vietnam during the final years of the Vietnam War. Assigned to Air Force technical and intelligence-related activities supporting combat operations throughout Southeast Asia. Received the Bronze Star for meritorious service.

1972–1973 | Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV)

1131st USAF Special Activities – Saigon/Cholon, Republic of Vietnam

Assigned to special Air Force activities supporting Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV). Served in the Saigon area during the final phase of direct U.S. involvement in the war.

1973–1974 | Thailand During the Final Vietnam Campaigns

8th Tactical Fighter Wing – Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand

Served with the famed 8th Tactical Fighter Wing during continued U.S. air operations in Southeast Asia. The wing played a major role in air campaigns supporting operations in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia during the closing years of the conflict.

1974–1975 | Strategic Air Command

93rd Heavy Bomb Wing – Castle Air Force Base, California

Final assignment before retirement. Served with a Strategic Air Command bomber wing responsible for maintaining America's long-range nuclear deterrent during the Cold War.
